A Look Back: The SHSC Video Competition at FENS Forum 2024

(BACK TO FENS2024-SHSC INFO PAGE)

The Student Host Society Committee (SHSC) invited early career researchers attending the FENS Forum 2024 to participate in an exclusive video competition, where they had the chance to showcase their scientific adventures through captivating visual narratives.

Who Could Participate? This competition was open to early career researchers (ECRs), including postgraduate students (MSc, MD, PhD), clinical assistants/trainees, and researchers within the first five years of completing their highest degree.

What Were the Videos About? Participants were encouraged to create short videos, up to 60 seconds in length, offering glimpses into their lives as scientists. Whether it was unveiling the wonders of Live Cell Imaging, sharing a typical day in the lab, or giving a sneak peek into their Forum poster, the goal was to tell a compelling story through visual media. AI tools were welcomed, as long as their use was clearly indicated, and all content had to be copyright-compliant.

The Selection Process Winners were selected by the SHSC based on creativity, clarity, and the impact of their storytelling. The competition adhered to ethical guidelines, particularly concerning the use of animals in research, in line with the European Directive.

Timeline and Rewards The competition ran until June 17, 2024, with winners announced during the FENS Forum on June 28. The winner received a €300 prize and exclusive SHSC merchandise, with all participants receiving SHSC goodies as well.

Reflecting on the Event The SHSC Video Competition was a highlight of the FENS Forum, giving early career scientists a platform to shine a light on their work and creativity. We hope it inspired participants to continue exploring the intersection of science and storytelling, long after the Forum concluded.
